Melissa Carnemolla – The Island within the Island

Nel progetto The Island Within the Island, Melissa Carnemolla documenta con sguardo poetico e incisivo le condizioni di sfruttamento nella Fascia Trasformata della Sicilia sud-orientale, un’area di 9.000 ettari coperta da serre che alimentano il mercato ortofrutticolo europeo. Tra silenzi istituzionali e degrado ambientale, le sue immagini rivelano come economia legale e criminalità organizzata si intreccino, sfruttando i corpi e la terra. L’opera solleva interrogativi etici sulla sovrapproduzione alimentare e sulla logica estrattiva che accomuna lo sfruttamento agricolo e sessuale, restituendo centralità alle vite invisibili che nutrono le nostre tavole. 

Il progetto è stato curato da Maria Ghetti, curatrice e creative producer attiva nel campo della fotografia contemporanea e co-fondatrice di Defrost Studio.

The Island Within the Island by Melissa Carnemolla unveils the hidden realities of southeastern Sicily’s agricultural zone, a 9,000-hectare expanse of greenhouses supplying European markets with low-cost produce. Beneath the plastic lies a parallel world marked by exploitation, environmental degradation, and institutional neglect. Through poetic yet sharp imagery, Carnemolla exposes the overlap between legal economies and organized crime, underscoring how both the land and vulnerable bodies are extracted for profit. Her work raises questions about overproduction and the commodification of life. Curated by Maria Ghetti, a curator and creative producer focused on photography, social issues, and environmental narratives, and co-founder of Defrost Studio.
